Your habits and routines make or break your success!!

A question was raised to me – “Of all of the productivity hacks you coach on, which one would help me the most”?

  • Goal Setting
  • Time Blocking
  • Revenue Generation Management
  • Time Tracking
  • etc..

 My response to the question is simply, “It depends”. It depends on what you need help on:

  • Lack of planning
  • Lack of prioritizing
  • Lack of delegating, deleting or delaying
  • Lack of focus
  • Lack of willpower
  • Inability to sacrifice or compromise
  • etc.

Those challenges are the result of the habits and routines you currently have or don’t have, or which ones you decide to incorporate into your day… because how you start your day is often how you finish it.

But what are habits and routines?
 
A habit is an action we do often in a regular and repeated way with little or no conscious, i.e. brushing your teeth.  Routine is a regular way of doing things in a particular order and often comes with effort or forthought. i.e. your running program is your routine; warm up for 5 minutes, run for X miles or minutes, maybe you run stairs, etc..  then take 5 minutes to cool down, you shower, make a protein shake, etc.

So, if you are lost, stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed, lean on the habits and routines that can help you move forward OR mix up and start new ones that ensure constant planning and action which will provide motivation and momentum.

Consider one or more of these habits and structure them into your daily routine:

  • Get up 1 hour earlier (or work later)
  • Workout every day (even if it is for 15 mins)
  • Read daily
  • Speond time on focused thinking
  • Use affirmations, prayer, meditation etc.
  • Spend time to journal….
  • Set goals and action plans
  • Block out your calendar with key actvities/categories of work
  • Create your most productive work environment daily
    • Plan for distractions
    • Set up workspace for focus and attention
  • Assess results each evening and make adjustments

Note: If you have to force yourself to do something, even after trying multiple times to do it regularly, and it doesn’t become automatic, it is not a habit for you. Be okay with that and try something else.
 
WHY are habits and routines beneficial

  • They provide organization, structure, systems, order
  • They keep you focused and clear
  • They ensure productivity and results
  • They give you confidence, energy and momentum
