Honor your RICHes & gain jobs, projects, clients, and personal growth!
I talk to a great deal of professionals, especially women, about honoring their riches of talent, skill, achievement, award, experience and adventure; and to not be ashamed to communicate those riches out to others – when and where appropriate. For example, when searching for a job; you need to be confident and share proudly what you have achieved and are capable of achieving. A potential client needs to know the person he/she is hiring is confident in their skill set to accomplish the goals laid out. And lastly, leaders want other leaders to stand strong in their abilities. Unfortunately, not many know how to communicate their own riches; fearful of coming off as boasting or arrogant. Or they hide behind being shy or humble.
If you are not willing to stand strong in your riches and express that strength and certainty to others, you are hurting yourself before you may even get started. But we can cover that in another post.
If you are not willing or able to toot your own horn, then at least get others to do it for you – and maybe their words will help you gain you confidence to do it as well.
- First RICH Tip – Begin to request formal written recommendations from peers, managers, clients, vendors, partners, etc.. that you can then use on Linkedin, in your resume, within your BIO, on your website, etc.. Whether it is during and/or after a project, at various stages of a job, or following an engagement/workshop, etc., always go back and request from a key player who was part of your work, to write out a few sentences touting the contribution you made to him/her, a business or a project.
“But what if they say no?”, I am often asked.
Ask yourself – If I fulfilled or exceeded expectation, why would they refuse to do it?
Similar to your ability to honor your own riches, you have to gain the confidence within yourself to value the contributions you make to others. And with that, you simply ASK for someone to acknowledge those contributions.
Now, if you are waiting until they offer to write you one, know this: 9 out of 10 times they never will. It is not top of mind for them. It has to be for you!!!! ASK! You will be shocked to learn that they are proud to do it. Like Kamales Lardi, of Lardi & Partner Consulting GmbH, who I had coached. I knew she was pleased by our engagement and therefore I asked if she would contribute to my own Linkedin Recommendations…. and of course she said “I would love to”…
“I discovered Bernadette by chance through her profile on LinkedIn earlier this year. Following our first phone call, I was convinced that she would be the right business advisor for me. Not only does she have strong experiences in the corporate world, but she is also analytical, strategic and driven. She is able to quickly understand what I need to take my business to the next level and acts as a sounding board for my ideas and concerns. Her belief in my capabilities and persistence in ensuring I push through challenges motivates me to keep moving forward.”
I didn’t have to put a gun to her head or beg her mercifully to write it. I asked and she was happy to oblige. But you won’t receive them if you do not ask.
- RICH Tip – Now, many times someone will ask, or send a recommendation request through Linkedin, and they never hear back from the person. Quite honestly, it is most likely because they do not know what to say. Or, they don’t know what you would want them to say. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with you starting it for them by writing one out, then providing it to them to edit, update and personalize for themselves. Don’t assume they do not want to write it for you, or do not feel you don’t deserve a recommendation. Simply help them out.
- RICH Tip – You also have to do them a favor and follow up. Without knowing what kind of day or week they are having, they may have overlooked the email or message. They may have started it and gotten distracted. Or they are waiting for you to help them out with what to say. FOLLOW UP
Recommendations from others go a long way toward your job search, client acquisition, promotion or a raise, or a new project assignment.
BONUS TIP – Linkedin favors in search results those profiles that have a strong number of Recommendations. The more you have the more frequent your profile will appear in queries that companies, recruiters and/or potential clients are searching on. Start focusing on obtaining them and continue working on communicating your riches for yourself as well.
Today’s RICHaction – go and ask 3 peers, managers or clients for a Linkedin Recommendation…. as they play a key role in finding new jobs, getting promotions, requesting a raise, acquiring a new client, etc…. the list goes on.
