Being a leader of your own business is TOUGH!!!! But you gotta LOVE IT!

I am currently sitting here, at my home office desk….. staring up at the wall in front of me which is covered in post it notes of all sizes. The main one I focus on is my To Do list: which consists of only 3 things, but those three things are testing every ounce of positivity, faith, and energy I have at the moment.

(RICH TIP – I recommend to clients to only list out 3 To Do’s for any given day, and they should be the 3 that will have the highest contribution to your weekly goal. Why only 3? When you have fully completed 1 of the tasks, you have completed 33% of them. Much better than 3% on a longer list of 10 things)

Some people think that being on your own; having your own business, would be a dream come true. And for many it is. But even they, like I, experience days, weeks and maybe even months, when the daily grind is so hard, you just want to throw in the towel; especially if that grind doesn’t result in monies in the bank.

There was a time, not long ago, when I had everything I needed to run any department, organization, and a business: resources, team members, technologies and tech geeks. They were all at my finger tips, ready to solve any issue, complete any task, and retrieve anything I ever needed or wanted. You have to love corporate.

As a leader of your own business, unless you have tons of cashflow and profits, you don’t have those things. Sure, you may contract them or even have them on staff, but even so, the majority of business owners work virtually, meaning their staff are scattered elsewhere and not in the room down the hall (unless it is in your home. Therefore, you have to rely on their schedule, availability and motivation to address your need or issue, in order to get something done – at your pace. Example…. 1 of the 3 To Do’s I have is a video for a webinar program I am rolling out. All I need to do is create a 3 minute (tops) personal invitation, embed it into a electronic invitation email, and then sit back until all of the registrations come pouring in.

Doesn’t sound to difficult, does it? I am getting myself worked up over nothing, RIGHT? I mean, anyone and everyone creates selfee’s and their own videos, right off of their phones. They then use facebook, twitter, linkedin and other free sources to promote themselves and whatever it is their selling, right? What could be so difficult?

Afterall, this is your business, your income, your roof/food and clothing. You do not want to blow it on the first out, right? So, you lay out a plan –

Criteria and work needed:

  • The message has to be impactful if I want them to act on my proposed next step
  • Since it is going to some key corporate executives, the quality and presentation (including of me) needs to be better than just good.
  • The graphics need to be cropped and edited in, so there are call to action throughout the piece
  • It has to pass the litmus test with your team (coaches, supporters, etc.)

Time for prep –

  • The message has to be impactful to create conversion. Never taking this part for granted, I write, and rewrite until the cows come home, to ensure the message is both clear and impactful.  I am still working on that.
  • The video output of take after take, has a complete message, but cut it is chopped up across multiple takes.
  • So, off to the editing room, called ‘my desk at my house’.
  • Graphics created, cropped and edited. Again… not a graphic designer, let alone an editor. Thank the Lord for online applications!
  • Then there is the hardest step…getting your team (of 1 or XXX) to all agree you are ready to go. Because again, you get one shot, their livelihoods are reliant on your success…and therefore their edits and comments keep coming – some even suggesting to start over.  AGHHHHHHHHH

You look up at the clock… it is only 1:00 p.m.   Exhausted, you distract yourself from that hell, by opening your blog and venting all of your frustrations out into an educational blog post:))) And if that doesn’t work…this will
